Evagrios the Solitary, a fourth century ascetic, characterizes our self-deception as “mistaking smoke for light.” Thus, the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and truth, is characterized less by acquisition and more by discernment. I’m an impetuous and horribly impatient learner. But as I work my way through a life of theological and pastoral challenges, I am hopeful that I may stumble onto some truths, eternal and temporal, despite myself.
